Miss World 2016 winner Puerto Rico’s Stephanie passed the coveted crown to Manushi Chhillar, who won this year’s Femina Miss India 2017.

Going back in history, it was Reita Faria who won the beauty title for the first time in 1966 from Asia. The next time India won the title was in the year 1994 when Aishwarya Rai was crowned Miss World. Rai’s win opened up various avenues for Indian beauties who went on to claim the title like Priyanka Chopra, Diana Hayden and Yukta Mookhey.

Chhillar became the 67th titleholder at the prestigious pageant while Miss England Stephanie Hill and Miss Mexico Andrea Meza were the runners up.

The answer that got her the title was in response to the question – which profession deserves the highest salary in this world – as asked by judges. Her heartfelt answer won everyone’s heart. Manushi replied, “My mother has been my biggest inspiration, so I have to say, a mother’s job. It is not always about cash, but love and respect as well. A mother deserves that the most.”

Reita Faria, who was the first Indian and Asian to win the Miss World crown in 1966, has been Chhilar’s idol. She grew up admiring her and, today, she has landed herself at the very same place.

Before the competition she told PTI, “Though I was a medical student, I never had a plan B. I don’t want to regret anything in life, so it was really important for me to win this competition. My aim has always been to win the Miss World title.”

The Haryana beauty, who is just 20, won the ‘Head To Head Challenge’ and also got the title of ‘Beauty with Purpose’ earlier today. But that was not just it, she ended the day by claiming the Miss World title, after giving her best.

This moment is what Chhillar always dreamt of. In an interview she had mentioned, “As a kid, I always wanted to participate in the competition but I never knew I would make it this far. Winning the Miss World title is now not just my dream, but also that of my family and friends. I know it’s going to be a journey that I will never forget. Whatever the result, I am going to learn, enjoy and give it my best. The rest, I leave to destiny.”
